"Contentious Birthday Menu"
or "You Call That a Sausage?" Idea came from conversations about "contracts concerning the shared custody of a dog" and those could include specific requirements regarding the birthday menu. "Refugee"
Wanted to paint something powerful and personal. The artist worked for UNICEF in camps on the Cambodian (refugees escaping Pol Pot) and Afghan (refugees escaping the Russians - before the Taliban took hold) borders so the plight of refugees everywhere feels both viceral and unforgettable. |
"The Geisha's Fox"
Commissioned - the commissioner wanted something with Japanese flavor and a Fox (her last name). "Untitled"
Left this untitled because it evokes so many different feelings. Best left for the viewer to decide. "Beau's Tiger"
Painted for the artist's 4 year old grandson. Wanted to leave a lot of mysteries for him to resolve....or not. "The One with the Far Away Eyes"
A favorite line from a Rolling Stones song. Refers to her as being a "little bleary" but not sure that applies here. Perhaps some other feeling. "General Two Cherries"
Arrived at this painting after a long struggle. Met a man who had been a machine gunner, one of a handful of survivors from the Chosin Reservoir battle in the Korean war in 40 degree below weather. It was too cold to eat anything and they could not stop firing because they were literally being overrun by the enemy. The Airforce dropped tiny Tootsie Rolls that they could suck on while they continued fighting. The few survivors were given little Tootsie Rolls to hang off their military ribbons. This man was the essence of reliliance. He somehow went on to lead a full and sane life. This concept - some carry on and thrive, many don't - is fascinating to the artist. She didn't want to forget their conversation. No attempt was made to look like the man and only after seeing a book from a Miro show did the facial features reveal themselves. The cherries signify the best of the best. "Cake"
Part of a series inspired by East Indian Mogul miniatures. |

"Compassion"
This could be 2 people or one. Perhaps it is someone comforting a friend who appears to be quite shattered or vacant, or it could be someone providing compassion toward themselves. Or, another view is that one of them is a ghost. |
